So Whats New With Dr. Boydston?
I feel compelled to start this newsletter by telling you more about myself, and what makes me tick... and drives me to do the work I am dedicated to. It has been too long since I have published this newsletter. My loyal subscribers and clients already know much of this already, so I apoligize to them.
My Journey Into Healthcare...
My
journey into healthcare began because I had an intrinsic desire to both
help and understand people. I talked about becoming a doctor from the
time I was just a young kid on the playground. Although I started
college by exploring several options it wasn't until I was fully fixed
on my goal to become a doctor that I felt I was moving in the direction
my life seemed to be pulling me.
As
I progressed through my formal education I was always asking questions.
I wasn't one to take everything taught to me at face value. I needed to
UNDERSTAND the reasons and mechanisms behind what was presented...
sometimes I silently rebelled and sought truth and understanding
independent from my coursework when the ideas presented didn't seem to
coincide with reality, and much to the dislike of some professors I
openly called into question some of the ideas they held so dearly.
My
goal in becoming a doctor was to understand what was really going on
with a sick person's physiology, and work WITH the body to restore
better function. There is a huge difference between treating a set of
symptoms and treating a PERSON. The second one requires understanding
what is causing those symptoms and working on the faulty physiology.
My
first stop in my professional training was to Chiropractic School where
I graduated Valedictorian from Life Chiropractic College West, in the
San Francisco Bay Area of California.
During
this time my area of great interest was chiropractic neurology.
Chiropractic neurology is a specialized approach to looking at the
brain and nervous system, from a functional perspective.
Science
has shown us in the last twenty years that the brain can change,
re-mold, and create new connections, based on the stimulation you give
it. It has been proven, over and over again, that it is possible to
systematically diagnose specific areas of the brain that are weak, and
change those weak areas through non-invasive rehabilitation. The
scientific term for this is Brain Plasticity.
My
work at the Boydston Institute began in 2006 by exclusively treating
chronically ill patients with chronic pain and fatigue. By using my
Brain-Based approach, I was helping people turn around their lives,
giving them a chance to live well again, after countless doctors and
specialists had given up.
It
didn't take me long to realize, and you may have come to this
conclusion because of your own circumstance, that when a person has a
health condition that is not considered life threatening, and there is
no easy fix, our medical system is completely inadequate.
I
would see the desperation on the faces and in the eyes of the patients
I treated. They were yearning to have someone listen to them, to spend
the time necessary to get to the bottom of their problem, and most
importantly, to help them break the chains their illness had put on
their lives.
I
understood them, and I knew I had to engineer my institute to allow me
to function as the doctor I needed to be for them. I couldn't rush
people in and out in 10 minutes like commonly happens in our current
medical system. I had to treat people, understanding that each person
was different, had different physiology, and could not be treated with
cookie cutter approaches and protocols.
It
is from that perspective and approach that the Boydston Institute was
started and transformed. I am constantly integrating new information
and knowledge into the treatment of my patients.
It
has become the living embodiment of how I would want to be treated with
attention to detail, integrating functional medicine, functional
neurology, functional endocrinology, and functional blood chemistry
analysis. Then using Brain Based Therapy and a functional approach to
diet and nutrition. I am proud to serve my patients, and my clients
know that they are part of something special, unlike anything they have
experienced in healthcare.
So
that is a little background into my health care evolution. We do things
differently than most but our goal and mission is very singular... "to create exceptional outcomes for our clients."
As you read my newsletter every 2 weeks I am going to be sharing more
about our Institute, and what drives me both in practice and in life.
Every
newsletter issue I am going to be sharing a big idea in health. I am
going to try to go beyond basic tips or news on health and talk more
about the big picture in healthcare that we try to embody at the
Boydston Institute.
For
this issue I am going to bring back a classic... I wrote it last year
that counts as a classic right? :) In all seriousness this has serious
implications in the health and well being of not only yourself but your
friends and love ones so read carefully.
In
my opinion the reason that those with chronic health conditions go from
doctor to doctor, and continue to suffer is that we have created an
inadequate system of "specialists" in our healthcare model. The reason I say that is because our body doesn't work that way. We don't have a series of systems that work independently of each other.
Most
doctors learn the body in chapters. Chapter one-the heart, chapter
two-the lungs, chapter 3-the stomach and intestines...you get the
picture. That's why there are 'specialists' in for each of those book
chapters. The problem is that for millions of you see specialist after
specialist after specialist and you still don't get any better.
Learning
and understanding the body in this way--compartmentalizing it--makes
the doctor TOO focused on any one system. He/she loses sight of the big
picture.
The BIG picture is that Everything is connected.
Let
me give you an example. Gluten intolerance can cause systemic
inflammation. The inflammation can cause headaches, mouth ulcers,
weight gain or weight loss, poor immunity to disease, and
gastrointestinal upset. If this goes untested and untreated long enough
it can turn on genes for autoimmune thyroid. The patient will now have
fatigue, weight gain, hair loss etc. This can continue and cause
hormone shifts, vitamin and mineral imbalances, upset blood sugar
regulation, and sabotage hormone balance.
So
what doctor is going to look for the gluten intolerance and autoimmune
condition PLUS know how to rehabilitate that person's brain so it
functions normally again PLUS know what natural supplementation will
modulate the immune attack and support the brain?
That's why I call it THE BIG PICTURE.
Day after day I talk to people suffering with every conceiveable symptom and "diagnosis"
you can think of: peripheral neuropathy, fatigue, fibromyaglia,
polycystic ovaries, thyroid, multiple sclerosis, autism---and even some
conditions that don't have a formal label yet.
And these people have been to the rheumatologist, who sent them to the neurologist who sent them to the "[insert condition] Specialist." And years go by but the person never really gets better. WHY?
Because
none of these doctors have taken a step back and looked, seriously, AT
THE WHOLE PERSON. All their systems, All the possibilities. All at
once. Why waste 6 months, 12 months going to all these different people?
I'm
not talking about just medical doctors. Having been through
chiropractic college I can say that the same thing happened to me.
Fortunately, what helped open my eyes to the bigger picture was
neurology. It's a scientific fact that the brain and nervous system
control EVERY aspect of your health. In fact, you can't name a body
function or body part that the brain and nervous system don't help
control and regulate. Hey, this is why I branched into Chiropractic
Neurology.
But the reality is, I need to know everything:
How many different specialists would you have to go see to make sure you got a comprehensive assessment? 5? 10?
Like I said, I've had to become learned and proficient with that entire list. There is NO
way I would've been able to help 90% of the patient's in my practice
without knowing all that. The majority of people that see us have been
mismanaged, mis-diagnosed and already seen plenty of specialists.
So
that wraps up this addition of the newsletter. I hope you got something
out of it, and if you didn't you really should read this issues big
idea one more time.
